This year’s Freud Memorial Lecture, hosted by the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, will explore how Donald Winnicott’s late work on the early psychic environment and psychic survival of the object has advanced the psychoanalytic theory of aggression.
Jan Abram, who is a Fellow of the Institute of Psychoanalysis and Visiting Professor in the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, will be presenting on ‘Winnicott’s last word on the death instinct’.
Using a psychoanalytic case study Professor Abrams will explore how Winnicott’s advances in the psychoanalytic theory of aggression contrast with Freud’s speculative concept of the death instinct and the Kleinian development of the death instinct as a manifestation of innate envy, hate and sadism.
Professor Abram is a psychoanalyst in private practice and author of The Language of Winnicott: a dictionary of Winnicott’s use of words and editor of soon-to-be published Donald Winnicott Today.
The Freud Memorial Lecture will be held in the Lakeside Theatre at the University of Essex’s Colchester Campus on Thursday 31 May at 6pm. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public but please register to secure a place athttp://www.essex.ac.uk/artson5/theatre_booking
