The concept of emergence keeps coming up in these discussions of archetype. Is a particular image “pre-existent”, a priori, or is it entirely new and/or “emergent”? It often gets framed as an either/or to answer the question of whether or not a symbol can have a “new” meaning. But I don’t think this dichotomy fully...
