Men on the Couch

With Rotimi Akinsete, Paul Atkinson, Andy Metcalf, Dr Eyal Rozmarin and Professor Andrew Samuels

Saturday 23 September 2017

This conference is about men in therapy – from both sides of the ‘couch’. Our speakers will explore the ways in which men manage their vulnerabilities – including their desire for connection and dependency needs – as well as some male relational strategies that are more familiar in our culture: the appearance of invulnerability, emphasis on performance and detachment from others. They will be asking why, often, men still feel required to defend against need and what challenge this can present for men in therapy, and their therapists – whether male or female.

We will also be talking about men as therapists, what takes men into this caring profession. Is this an act of subversion, contradicting masculine stereotypes or a solution to their own awakened needs? Finally, we will be considering therapy specifically between men: what happens between man and man when they look at these conditions of manhood together? Transferences to the therapist such as rival, friend, father, the son or brother will evoke reciprocal responses and potentially fruitful rupture and repair scenarios – perhaps more so when across a cultural divide. How are these distinctive and specific when they are between two men?

How does therapy tackle the impossibility of being a man?
