It’s good to know how much attention is now being paid to cultural traumata – some more devastating than others. That a whole group, e.g. Russian-speaking Germans, can come to some kind of resolution must be particularly desirable.
My quotation was more in the nature of a rhetorical question, as I understood Eva Hoffman to be asking it – i.e. the continuing question of how one makes cultural transition yet remaining, or perhaps recovering, ‘oneself’. Even where the background and a satisfying group identity is ‘hybrid’, one would hope to be ‘at one’ with oneself, in some measure, too.
